Tree felling for suburban gardens
Felling a big tree in a suburban garden is very different from felling one in an open field. Most properties in Garsfontein, Moreleta Park and the rest of Pretoria East have walls, roofs, paving and pools within reach of a falling trunk, so a large tree is rarely dropped in one piece.
Where space is tight, the tree is usually rigged and brought down section by section, with heavy limbs lowered on ropes to keep them clear of buildings and paving. The right method for your tree is decided during the on-site assessment.
Assessed first, then quoted
Before any cutting starts, the tree's lean, weight, the condition of the wood and everything around it are checked. That decides whether it can be felled directly, needs to be sectioned, or needs pieces roped down.
You then get a written quote setting out the price and exactly what is included, so the scope is agreed before work starts.
Clean-up and wood removal
Once the tree is down, the trunk and branches are cut into manageable pieces and the area is raked and swept. Removal of the wood and green waste can be included in your quote, or the logs can be stacked for your fireplace or braai.
When should a tree be felled?
- The tree is dead or dying: bare canopy, fungus at the base or bark falling off
- It is leaning more over time, or the soil around the roots is lifting
- Roots are cracking walls, paving, pools or drains
- The trunk has split or cracked after a storm
- It has grown too close to the house or roof
- It is a declared invasive species, such as syringa
